Herald Student Reporters / Yujun Lee

Since I was young, I was interested in history and social issues. So, when I was in elementary school, I joined the Gyeonggi-do Student Reporter Group. I enjoyed writing articles as a student reporter, but unfortunately, I had to leave after two years as I moved to the United States. As soon as I moved to the US, the school closed due to the pandemic, so I began contacting my friends in Korea often and sharing each others’ situations. Even after the pandemic ended, I wanted to share various local and global news with more people. While searching the internet, I found out about the Herald and applied to become a student reporter.
This year, I participated in a journalism orientation program at my school district. In the program, I learned various skill sets you need as a journalist. I think my previous experience as a student reporter at the Herald was helpful.
The most memorable moment from the last six months with HSR was writing about the Super Bowl. When I lived in Korea, I didn’t know American football well, so I didn’t know the Super Bowl was a popular event. As I came to the States, I realized that it is a huge event that many people pay attention to, so I decided to write an article about the match. The Super Bowl tickets were extremely expensive, so I watched the match on TV with my friends. Also, I usually take the photo for my article, but this is the only article that I wasn’t able to use my photo.
Through my experience as a student reporter for HSR, I came to pay deep attention to my local community, and in particular, events regarding my identity as a Korean living in the United States. Also, writing articles consistently helped me improve my writing skills and how to convey messages to readers concisely. I just began my third term at HSR, and I highly recommend this activity to other students.
