Herald Student Reporters / Yujun Lee

Date : 2024.02.14
I have been interested in history and social studies since I was young.

I always liked telling stories about current events to others, so when I was in elementary school, I worked as a student reporter in the local student press.

As I moved to the U.S. in 2020, I also became interested in current events in the U.S.

It was the midst of the COVID pandemic, so I began telling current situations in the U.S. to my friends living in Korea.

Even after the pandemic ended, I continued telling different stories in the U.S. and thought it would be nice to have an opportunity to tell stories to a bigger audience.

Through searching, I found out about Herald Student Reporters, which met my motive, so I decided to apply to Herald Student Reporters.

This October, I got to participate in the orientation program for journalism.

In the program, I learned different skills for journalistic writing, and I think my experiences writing as a student reporter in Herald benefited me at this time.

The most memorable moment of my past six months in HSR was writing about the event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the U.S. and Korea this June.

It was an event that celebrates the 70th anniversary of the alliance and also commemorates Korean War veterans.

I visited the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, which is a place where about 2,500 Korean War veterans are engraved.

It was a valuable time where I could appreciate the dedication and hardships of the veterans.

After joining Herald Student Reporters, I began deeply paying attention to events that are happening in my community, looking for a story that I can share to a bigger audience.

Especially, as I continued telling stories that relate to both the U.S. and Korea, I also gained interest in the history of the relationship between the two countries.

Furthermore, since my article is read by readers of various backgrounds, I get to focus on writing concisely.

Six months in Herald Student Reporters was a valuable experience where I learned a lot in many different aspects. I aim to improve my skills a lot through continuing to write as a student reporter in HSR.
